August meetup

Today we met up with six: Menno, Alf, Eric, Raymond, Nick and myself (Martin). Due to illness Fierman had to cancel, so the game between him and Vasiliy could not take place, vasiliy and his girlfriend dropped in to say hi!

Menno and Alf played "In the Shadows" (Resistance in France 1939-1944).

Eric, Raymond, Nick and myself joined the Deutsche Kriegsmarine and played Uboat. Uboat is a app driven game (2019) where the 4 player take on the role of captain, first officer, chief engineer and navigator. The goal is to reach the succeed in the primary objective and when possible pick some secondary objectives (which are added during play by the app).
For Nick and myself is was the first time playing, although the game sit on my shelve in kickstarter edition since feb 2019). Raymond and Eric played before... 5 years ago.
We selected the mission 'Breakthrough' starting on october 4, 1940. We started at sea near Bergen (AN43) and had to navigate to the Atlantic quadrant AN43. We had 58 hours to achiev that goal. Our mission briefing informed us what area to be carefull or avoid (minis, lots of escort activity)
And so we set out. And we had fun
Just before 17.00 our submarine was sunk by depth chages, 10 hours before our deadline, one quadrant away from our destination.
During our travel we encountered several convoys and ultimately never attacked one. We did sometimes struggle with the amopunt of orders an the number of tasks, maintenace, course change, speed change, dopt cchnage, cooking, receiving and sending enigma messages.
We met our demise when we encounterd an group of three merchant with two escorts. We were heading in a heads on course and debated what to to, and decided to dive. The order was processed just not quick enough so we were discovered just before entering the dive command. The escorts started searing for us... Requiring us to be silent beacause the app registers the sounds! The first hull breach from depth chages we managed to repair, but hen a second hit us and our crew was exhaused. we coul do nothing more that watch the countdown time 2:30 minutes before our ship sunk and we lost the mission.
We did manage to get two secondary goals: save the crwe of an immobilized submarine and make a weather report.
Looking forward to playing this again, maybe with the upgarde kit, which is currently active on kickstarter.
